Water passing through a reverse osmosis membrane travels slowly, and it takes extraordinary patience to fill a glass of water. Therefore, domestic reverse osmosis filters are equipped with an air-water storage tank to store the purified water. The storage tank provides a constant flow of water when the drinking water tap is turned on.

The tank has two cavities – air and water, separated by a flexible diaphragm. The air pressure pumped into the air cavity is 0.4 – 0.6 bar. During the operation of reverse osmosis, the purified water flows into the water of the tank and compresses the air from the diaphragm part, the water pressure increases. When the drinking water tap is opened, the compressed air passing through the flexible diaphragm pushes the accumulated water from the tank towards the tap.
